Coventry Sounds
Collected by Mark Cook
Coventry Sounds is a selection of people from Coventry, artists, clothes makers, photographers, musicians (quite a few musicians), youth workers, journalists. Most of them grew up in Coventry between the 60s and 80s… Many of them, you could say, were instrumental in, or influenced by, various iterations of “youth culture”: punk, goth, hip hop, rave, South Asian music, sometimes the music, sometimes the fashion or ‘zines. However, 40, perhaps 50 years on, many of them are still doing what they did, or track back from where they are now in their conversations. Was this “youth culture” or were they just younger versions of their selves now? Along the way, listen out for unexpected stories or connections (what was in the water at Gosford Park School?). Some of them crossed paths with each-other in the random way that is only possible in a medium size city like Coventry
