Setting the Record Straight is a year-long National Lottery Heritage Funded project working to address imbalances in the emerging Museum of Youth Culture’s collections by setting the record straight on youth culture history free from institutional bias, moral panic and outdated stereotypes.

From the pioneers of the first Pride in 1970s, to the stories the illusive Asian Underground scene of the 1990s, the project has started to tell new stories within our collections. Through our Grown up in Britain campaign and our new Outreach Champions programme, we’ve received over 2000 photographs and taken on our first oral histories, telling youth culture histories in new ways. Within the project we’ve focused on those voices underrepresented in our collections, including the LGBTQ+ community and Black and South Asian diaspora communities.
