"My personal and professional interests and experiences made this piece of work a really exciting opportunity.

I basically contacted women I knew and women I was in touch with on social media. All were really happy and keen to be involved and the main difficulty was choosing ten from the hundreds of contacts I know with interesting stories to tell.

I particularly wanted to focus on Black women, ensuring our voices and stories are included in this project, so the majority of the oral histories I collected were those of Black women. I chose women from different generations who had been involved in a variety of scenes and subcultures in their youth, demonstrating the wide ranging and diverse nature of Black women’s experiences. It was important to me to have as little input into the interview process as possible so that the oral histories centred the women’s stories in their own words. "

Sonia’s work has included project management roles in the statutory, not-for-profit, community and women’s sectors, predominantly in the fields of education, adult and community learning and therapeutic support, through her not for profit social enterprise New Rose Ltd. She has been involved in UK punk subculture since 1976, mostly as ‘fan’, but since 2016 organising various gigs and events through her Punk It Up! project. As a feminist and anti-racist community activist, she’s especially passionate about Black women’s representation and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Nottingham.
